He
was born as Patrick
Lauwerends in Paramaribo
Surinam, and since 1970
Rotterdam has been his
home base. Around 1980
he decided to focus on
his deep love
of music and begin to
play the bass guitar.
He
had performances and
recording sessions with Paul Middellijn, Erwin “Mr B Soul” Bouterse and many other
artists. He
also had the opportunity
to play with the then
very popular steel big
band "Dutch Rhythm
Steel & Show
band" for a 9
months tour in Germany,
France and Switzerland.
In the USA he toured
for 7 weeks with the
well-known African band
”Tulipa Negra”. On
Curacao he toured for 6
weeks with The “Guno
Kramer Jazz-Rock Fusion
Band” from Holland. In
Indonesia he had a tour
of 3 months with some
the funk group
"Enjoy" led by
Andro Biswane.
Because
of his full experience
he was frequently asked
to be a part of tours
abroad. As a result,
Patrick made contact
with many other
musicians who asked him
to be a part of both
national and
international tours.
After working with
several bands, Patrick
decided to take a break
and formerly study
music. During that time
he became friends with
the great bassist James
Long, who later became
his “Musical
Father”. James was
also the one who taught
Patrick to play the
double bass and also
introduced him into the
world of jazz. Because
of this he played
regularly with musicians
such musicians as Roy
Campbell, Art Foxall,
Mark Lewis, Zane Massey
and others when they
were on tour in the
Netherlands.
He
also performed as a band
member in musicals such
as "A Night At The
Cotton Club" and
"Let's Talk About
Sex".
In
addition, Patrick
collaborated on various
television productions
such as "Fellow
Citizens", this was
a Sesame Street like
production, a music
video which promoted
“Cuba As A Holiday
Destination”,
"The Domburg
Family" and a 4
serial documentary
entitled “The Life Of
An Artist”.
For
approximately 3 years,
Patrick worked and
recorded with Ronald
Snijders. This
collaboration resulted
in a live recorded CD
entitled, 'Sarramacca'.
As
an music organizer, for
2 ½ years he organized
the weekly Jazz sessions
in the Odeon Rotterdam
with such guests as:
Larry Wild Rice Swinging
Chicago blues Brothers,
Thys van Leer, the late
Rosa King*†, Archie
Shepp, Sue Challenger,
Wendell Morrison, and
many others! In 2005 he
monthly organized the
Jazz concerts in theatre
‘t Kapelletje in
Rotterdam where he
welcomed artists such as
Deborah Carter, Anna
Montan, Adrienne West,
Oscar Harris and Rob
Agerbeek. This series
will be continued in
2006/2007.
In
2001, Patrick had a
successful tour in his
homeland Surinam with
the gospel group 'The
Carmenians'. In that
same year once more he
went back ‘home’ to
Paramaribo for a very
successful Workshop in
the NAKS Cultural
building organized by
Lisibeti Promotions.
Patrick
has also been active in
the well-known Caribbean
pop band 'Trafassi' for
a year and a half and
also recorded with them.
A
busy musician, Patrick
continues his activities
with his own 3 bands:
“Adyakasa”, a 9
piece band with his own
compositions in a
crossover style of
Kaseko and Jazz. 'The
Patrick Lauwerends Jazz
4tet' is playing Jazz
standards with funky
influences and 'B 2 B
Accompany' former 'The
Patrick Lauwerends Dance
& Show Orchestra' an
accompaniment band for
national and
international artists.
As
a teacher of music,
Patrick believes that
education is a very
important part of life
which he intensely
transfers to his
students. He stimulates
the development of the
creative “spirit”
because he believes that
a general music
education contributes to
the entire well being of
individuals: Music
is The Food For Our Body
& Soul! as
he always says, and
It Is His First Love And
It Will Be His Last!
