He was born as Patrick Lauwerends in Paramaribo Surinam, and since 1970 Rotterdam has been his home base. Around 1980 he decided to focus on his deep  love of music and begin to play the bass guitar.

He had performances and recording sessions with Paul Middellijn, Erwin “Mr B Soul” Bouterse and many other artists. He also had the opportunity to play with the then very popular steel big band "Dutch Rhythm Steel & Show band" for a 9 months tour in Germany, France and Switzerland. In the USA he toured for 7 weeks with the well-known African band ”Tulipa Negra”. On Curacao he toured for 6 weeks with The “Guno Kramer Jazz-Rock Fusion Band” from Holland. In Indonesia he had a tour of 3 months with some the funk group "Enjoy" led by Andro Biswane.

Because of his full experience he was frequently asked to be a part of tours abroad. As a result, Patrick made contact with many other musicians who asked him to be a part of both national and international tours. After working with several bands, Patrick decided to take a break and formerly study music. During that time he became friends with the great bassist James Long, who later became his “Musical Father”. James was also the one who taught Patrick to play the double bass and also introduced him into the world of jazz. Because of this he played regularly with musicians such musicians as Roy Campbell, Art Foxall, Mark Lewis, Zane Massey and others when they were on tour in the Netherlands.

He also performed as a band member in musicals such as "A Night At The Cotton Club" and "Let's Talk About Sex".

 In addition, Patrick collaborated on various television productions such as "Fellow Citizens", this was a Sesame Street like production, a music video which promoted “Cuba As A Holiday Destination”, "The Domburg Family" and a 4 serial documentary entitled “The Life Of An Artist”.

For approximately 3 years, Patrick worked and recorded with Ronald Snijders. This collaboration resulted in a live recorded CD entitled, 'Sarramacca'.

As an music organizer, for 2 ½ years he organized the weekly Jazz sessions in the Odeon Rotterdam with such guests as: Larry Wild Rice Swinging Chicago blues Brothers, Thys van Leer, the late Rosa King*†, Archie Shepp, Sue Challenger, Wendell Morrison, and many others! In 2005 he monthly organized the Jazz concerts in theatre ‘t Kapelletje in Rotterdam where he welcomed artists such as Deborah Carter, Anna Montan, Adrienne West, Oscar Harris and Rob Agerbeek. This series will be continued in 2006/2007.

In 2001, Patrick had a successful tour in his homeland Surinam with the gospel group 'The Carmenians'. In that same year once more he went back ‘home’ to Paramaribo for a very successful Workshop in the NAKS Cultural building organized by Lisibeti Promotions.

Patrick has also been active in the well-known Caribbean pop band 'Trafassi' for a year and a half and also recorded with them.

A busy musician, Patrick continues his activities with his own 3 bands: “Adyakasa”, a 9 piece band with his own compositions in a crossover style of Kaseko and Jazz. 'The Patrick Lauwerends Jazz 4tet' is playing Jazz standards with funky influences and 'B 2 B Accompany' former 'The Patrick Lauwerends Dance & Show Orchestra' an accompaniment band for national and international artists.

 As a teacher of music, Patrick believes that education is a very important part of life which he intensely transfers to his students. He stimulates the development of the creative “spirit” because he believes that a general music education contributes to the entire well being of individuals: Music is The Food For Our Body & Soul! as he always says, and It Is His First Love And It Will Be His Last!

 History in Music up till now

A professional bass player since 1984, He plays the bass guitar and the double bass. Composer, Arranger, Music teacher and Workshop leader since 1989.  Music styles he played are: Kaseko, Caribbean music in general, Brazilian music, different kinds of Latin American music such as Salsa, Merenque and the crossover style of it such as Latin Jazz, and of course he loves to play Da Funk, Reggae, Blues and Jazz and Rock Fusion.

'Mans Vision' 1984 – 1984, Disco band in Gemany, 'Dutch Rhythm Steel & Showband' 1984 - 1985, 'The Bakadyari Gang' 1984 - 1987 (Patrick’s own band), 'Tulipa Negra', African band, 1985 - 1986 (this group performed mostly in France and Luxembourg, plus a 7 weeks USA tour in Boston, Providence and Rhode Island), 'Ronald Snijders & Paul Middellijn Sweet Perfume Project' (Switi Smeri Project) 1986, Erwin 'Mr B Soul' Bouterse Rhythm Cosmos 1986 - 1989 (Soul, Funk, Kaseko & own compositions of Erwin, they put up this band together), 'Paco Y Sancho' 1986 - 1990 (Salsa), 'Maria Da Castro' 1987 - 1989 (Brazilian band), 'Ka Fu Senko' 1988-1991 (Patricks own band with a crossover style of Kaseko and Funk), 'Sonora Paramarera' 1989 - 1989 (Merengue), 'Ben Verwaayen Jazz  Quintet' 1989 - 1993, 'Ritmico Especial' 1990 - 1992 (Caribbean music dance band), 'Franklin Batta' -No Excuse for Bad Manners- 1991-2001 (Soul & Funk), 'Adyakasa' 1992 (up to the present Enjoy to Indonesia 1993 tour of 3 months in Indonesia), 'Ronald Snijders Acoustic Band' (live CD Saramacca and performance on the North Sea jazz festival), 'Robby Alberga projects' and 1st cd “Different Realities“ (Fusion), 'Richard Pattiselanno projects and 1st cd of Triba “Living in a world” (Fusion), 'Trafassi' 2001-2003 (Caribbean pop band), 'The Carmenians gospel Singers' 1996–2001 (Gospel), 'The Music Masters'  1990 (John Swaab Best Of Live Music up to present, Dutch pop band), 'The Patrick Lauwerends Jazz 4Tet' 2000 up to present, 'B 2 BB Accompany' 1992 up to the present, and others... and a number of recordings...

 Musicals he performed in as a musician

“A Night at the Cotton Club”, this musical was about the very popular night club in Harlem-New York.

“Let's talk about sex” was a very popular comic production about a nutty professor who wants to talk about sex on a scientific level.

 Television Productions

"Fellow Citizens" (“Medelanders Nederlanders”), was a Sesame Street like production where musicians tell about their music and their instrument.

“The Life Of An Artist” (“Kunstenaars Timmeren Aan De Weg”) a television documentary in 4 parts concerning the life of artists with all its ups and downs by the NCRV television.

Played the music for the Dutch television soap series “The Domburg Family” by NCRV and R. Snijders, this was about a Surinamese family.

He also contributed to the music for the video film “Cuba As A Holiday Destination” by the Dutch Travel Coordinating Organization Department.

Further more he djammed with several Surinamese artists such as: Louis Windzak alias “Otis Redding”, Max Nijman, Denise Jannah, Ruth Jacott, Brian Bijlhout, Patricia Balrak and many more.

Festivals, workshop and education he has done:

Set up in 1988 of the Afro-Caribe Festival in association with two partners. This became an annual event in Rotterdam in the following 3 years..

He solo set up the music project "Rotterdam As Main Port Of Blues & Jazz" in 1998. This project took place for 30 months each Wednesday-evening in Odeon Rotterdam, where he presented great international and national artists and accompanied them with his orchestra. Artists such as Thys van Leer, Jan Akkerman, Archie Shepp, Terry Mann, Curtis Knight, Marion Rolle, Wendell Morrison, Sue Chaloner, Larry "wild" Rice, Time Out, the late great Rosa King and lots of others.

In 1999, he was asked to present a practical pop music workshop of 8 weeks for students in the 3rd grade at the Academy of Music in Tilburg.

During 6 months in the year 2000 he had the opportunity to teach music education in all its meaning to girls in the age of 11 up to 16 years in a closed institution in Zeist; this was a special experience.

In 2003 he was asked to join a club of youngsters called “Kids from The Maasstad”. This was a club for Surinamese kids up to 16 years old who where doing dancing, acting and singing.

In 2004 he taught at the “Rotterdam World School”, a Sunday school for kids up to 16 years.

He also taught music as a teacher from 2003 till 2005 on 3 prominent high schools in Rotterdam, namely The ‘Erasmiaans Gymnasium’, The ‘Libanon Lyceum’ and ‘The Thorbecke College’.

He is now putting up his own Music Academy, 2006.
